They're Losing It

Lieberman Campaign Manager Sherry Brown yesterday launched one of the most incoherent, non-sensical political attacks I've ever seen, saying of the attempt by Joe's constituents in New Haven to redundantly strip Joe of his Democratic credentials (something he's already done himself by, you know, losing the primary and starting his own party), that:

"The purge campaign launched today by Ned Lamont’s supporters is dirty political tricks at its worst, ranking up there with the outrageous tactics that Katherine Harris and the Republicans used in 2000 in Florida to stop all the votes from being counted."

Umm... right... except there is no secretary of state involved, this isn't a presidential election, there are no votes being counted, this isn't an officially endorsed action by anyone, the action is actually well within the law, and, well... actually, there are no similarities whatsoever.

Except that Joe's campaign is quickly starting to look an awful lot like Katherine's.
Comments:
There's also the fact that Joe Lieberman folded like a $5 tent in a gale-force wind in the face of the mighty Katherine Harris. Somehow I doubt he'll be quite so quick to concede defeat this time (in fact, I'm half expecting him to refuse to admit defeat even after the election).

As Ray Radlein says in his comment:

"There's also the fact that Joe Lieberman folded like a $5 tent in a gale-force wind in the face of the mighty Katherine Harris."

I had a similar thought when I read

"The purge campaign launched today by Ned Lamont’s supporters is dirty political tricks at its worst, ranking up there with the outrageous tactics that Katherine Harris and the Republicans used in 2000 in Florida to stop all the votes from being counted."

but I couldn't remember the story exactly. Naturally I went to Google, and (along with links to contemporary - 2000, that is - accounts) I found this recent Robert Weissman item from The Huffington Post:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-weissman/joe-lieberman-2000-and-2_b_26947.html

I have no idea whether the URL will appear as a link or whether I need to use HTML tags. i guess we'll see in a moment. Copy and paste if no link appears.

at least she got the word purge in there. rove, klein and brooks will be pleased.

it's funny that they use a recent republican crime to make joe look "good." after all....he is a Republican...has repub voters behind, repub donors, repub pols....

it almost says "vote democrat!"

EnergyAnalyst, it's not petty or stupid. It's shrewd politics. Joe's hope of winning rests on the plan to win over the Republican and conservative-independent vote while also fooling enough Democrats into thinking he's still one of them. The ability to identify himself as a "moderate Democrat," even after losing the primary and starting his own party, is essential to his campaign. The New Haven activists are trying to strip him of that essential ability to claim any Democratic affiliation, which is key because Joe cannot win the race if everyone recognizes him as the de facto Republican or unaffiliated independent on the ballot.

The Senate Dems should follow New Haven's lead and not only strip Joe of his committee assignments, but also announce that he will lose his Senate seniority if he's re-elected. That should sink him for good.

Except that Joe's campaign is quickly starting to look an awful lot like Katherine's.

Except that Lieberman is leading in the polls, while Harris is 40 points behind. Sorry...

I see that comment moderation has been enabled, so I doubt this will ever see the light of day. How sad.
