Wednesday Morning Round-Up
- Ned Lamont (D-CT) writes an op-ed piece in today's Wall Street Journal entitled "The Democrats Mean Business," focusing on the lessons he's learned as an entrepreneur and how he would apply those in government:
By every available metric, the "stay the course" strategy in Iraq is not a winning strategy. Changing course is neither extreme nor weak; it is essential for our national security....
...in the final analysis, the results of this election say less about me, and more about the people of Connecticut. They turned out in record numbers; they spoke every day with a simple eloquence and urgency about the country we love. They oppose the war and the fiscal nightmare crafted by President Bush and his allies. But their vote, finally, was one based on pragmatism and reality, on optimism and hope. And it is to these ideals and values that we plan to address my campaign in the months until November.
PsiFighter37 has some great commentary on this. - Dave Johnson at the Patriot Project has an extensive and must-read post exploring the connections between "Vets for Freedom," the GOP front-group which ran a full-page ad in the Courant in support of the Lieberman Party, and the various right-wing individuals and groups running attack ads against Democrats nationwide:
Pay close attention to the modus operandi operating here: Just as with the Swift Boat Vets for Truth, what we have here is conservative, party-aligned political operative PR firms setting up well-funded front-groups to attack opponents. Using a front group provides the real backers a degree of separation, insulating them from criticism for the nature of the attacks and smears.
- The NY Times has a big article today about... nothing. Apparently, the first week of the Lieberman Party has been an "energized" one, or at least that's what running a pre-planned and quite bad canned TV ad (which Chris Matthews referred to as the "I see dead people" ad), winning the grudging support of such luminaries as James Amman and Mark Pryor, and accepting the support of Karl Rove and Dick Cheney in becoming a full-throated McCarthyist fearmonger seems to indicate to the authors of the piece. One line stuck out:
In a state where Republican and independent voters make up a majority of the electorate, Mr. Lieberman is still developing a message about bipartisanship, but his aides say it will involve adopting positions from both parties and being willing to criticize Democrats as well as Republicans
When, specifically, have Joe Lieberman (Lieberman-CT) or Dan Gerstein criticized Republicans in the last week? - John Edwards will be campaigning with Ned Lamont (D-CT) and the Democratic ticket, tommorow at 5:45pm in New Haven. Mayor DeStefano will also be there.
- In the Courant, Jim Shea somehow snagged an exclusive interview with the reclusive main player in this race, Joe Lieberman's Ego:
Another reason everyone absolutely worships Joe is his modesty. I'm always telling him, Joe, don't let the fact that you are the most influential senator of your time go to your head.
Speaking of big heads, I can't help but notice that you're much larger than you used to be.
I've been working out a lot, pumping irony.
It shows. You're really inflated.
An ego needs to be in shape to play in the United States Senate.
And you seem to have become a major influence on Joe.
Hey, who do you think wrote the line in his concession speech: "For the sake of our state, our country and my party, I cannot and will not let that result stand"?
That's pretty arrogant.
Thank you.
Update: Some late-morning additions to the round-up:
- David Sirota highlights the central role that Enron lobbyist and former Lieberman Chief of Staff Michael Lewan is playing as the Lieberman Party Whip, trying to convince Senate Democrats to lay off of Joe while Joe lays the hardwood on them and their policies:
There really are no words to describe the immorality and shamelessness of an Enron lobbyist bragging to the press that he’s demanding elected Democrats ignore the results of our party’s small-d democratic election. The fact that this is even happening shows just how corrupt the Beltway culture has become. The fact that some Democratic Senators (including the vice chair of the Democrats campaign operation whose mission is “to to elect more Democrats to the United States Senate”) are actually listening to this Enron lobbyist’s demands is beyond disgusting - it tells you exactly why this fight against the hostile takeover of the Democratic Party is so important
- Yet another Republican endorses The Lieberman Party/De Facto Republican candidate. This time, it's Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME).
- Andrew Sullivan, of all people, questions the timing and legitimacy of the "alleged" (in his words) UK terror plot that had Lieberman, Rove, and Cheney spewing orchestrated anti-Democratic rhetoric last week:
If the only evidence they have was from torturing someone in Pakistan, then they have nothing that can stand up in anything like a court. I wonder if this story is going to get more interesting. I wonder if Lieberman's defeat, the resilience of Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the emergence of a Hezbollah-style government in Iraq had any bearing on the decision by Bush and Blair to pre-empt the British police and order this alleged plot disabled. I wish I didn't find these questions popping into my head. But the alternative is to trust the Bush administration.
Been there. Done that. Learned my lesson. - The inimitable Molly Ivins:
Lieberman’s unhappy fall in electoral battle touched off a volcano of drivel in the media. Some of it should be written off as the incurable Establishment tendency to defend its own. People who have known Joe Lieberman for 18 years are naturally predisposed in his favor—always happens. On the other hand, what a bunch of codswallop from people who should know better. They’re behaving as though no one had a right to challenge Lieberman, whereas given his record I can’t think of anyone who deserved challenge more.
